Insomnia Treatments
…sleep medications

When considering Insomnia treatments there are a large variety of possibilities. Many people, after consulting their doctor, decide to take some form of sleep medication or sleeping pill because this form of medication provides instant relief with minimal effort. Often this form of medication will improve how one feels and the quality of life takes a turn for the better.

Because of this, sleeping pills are among the most widely used drugs in the world, and their use is on the increase, but there are some that worry about their side-effects and other long term health risks that may come with this solution.

We must also be aware that this form of insomnia treatment is a “one size fits all” type of treatment, and those that understand the basic causes of insomnia may question whether a sleeping pill really gets to solve the root of the problem. Most times the lack of sleep has underlying causes and sleeping pills do not solve those. On the other hand, these medications do help patients get sleep, feel better, feel healthier and therefore, perhaps, better able to deal with the underlying causes.

This Form of Insomnia Treatments Falls Into Two Categories:

  1. Prescription Medication
  2. Over-the-Counter Medication

There are basically four groups of medications prescribed as Insomnia Treatments :

1…Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonists
2…Antidepressants
3…Melatonin Receptor Agonistsinsomnia treatments
4...Barbiturates.

Each group has specific benefits and side effects which should be discussed with your Doctor and the requirements for your own symptoms must be matched to what you are prescribed. Match the specific insomnia treatment to the specific underlying causes of your particular insomnia!

Over-the-counter medication often contains antihistamine as a primary active ingredient and we need to be aware of this a there is little long term research done on the effect of antihistamine on the body or it’s long term effectiveness or safety, although it is known to raise blood pressure. This again is something to talk over with your Doctor. Arm yourself with the knowledge and ask the right questions.

There are questions that you need to ask your Doctor if medication is to be one of the insomnia treatments recommended:

  • How quickly will the medication take effect? If my problem is waking in the middle of the night a quick acting medication may not be the smartest.
  • What is the impact on sleep quality? Do I wake up drowsy for example or is there a gradual change.
  • What tolerance does my body have? Allergies are always a problem.
  • What is the possibility of developing a dependence on the drug?
  • What are the possible side effects to look for?
  • What happens after taking this medication for some time? Where do you go from there…What is the next step?…

As has been noted before, it is very important to determine the real source of the insomnia, especially if it is another treatable illness or the result of a side-effect from another medication. Insomnia becomes the secondary treatment and the focus of the medication should be on the primary cause. Often the insomnia will cure itself once the underlying causes are dealt with.

Deciding on whether or not to take a sleep medication as an insomnia treatment has to be a personal decision based on discussion with your Doctor. There are no right or wrong answers but well informed, educated and logically based ones, as far as present day information is available. Do your homework, ask the questions, and get medical advice.
